ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

PPIS Family Therapy Institute (FTI), Singapore, in collaboration with Asian Academy of Family Therapy (AAFT), will be organising the 6th Annual AAFT Conference 2019. The conference will be held from 8-9 July 2019, at Batam Island, Indonesia.

The theme of the conference addresses spirituality in family therapy practice, inviting Asian and international practitioners to explore, deliberate and experience the use of spirituality differently in their practice.

In the effort to cope with every changing world, families are turning to something as they make sense of the world. Is it spirituality? Is it something else? What do we as family therapist or helping professional today need to know about spirituality that can offer the support families today require? Are we needing to see the importance of plurality in spirituality, or do we need to create and understand the concept of ‘fifth province” (McCarthy, 2010) to enable us to consciously create spaces for difficult value-laden conversation to seek the possibilities and inter-sectionality such conversations can offer? Asia provides the plethora of spiritual experiences that need to be deliberated and documented. This is not a demand for a single solution to address the issues and concerns raised by families. Rather, this is a call for practitioners to begin the difficult conversation to showcase how spirituality is explored, nurtured and challenged at many exchanges as we work with families today.

Clearly, the 'shades of spirituality' hopes to see beyond the single representation of how it has been utilized by families, agencies, society and the world at large. This conference hopes to bring practitioners together and provide a platform to deliberate and document the inter-sectionality of spirituality in the realm of family therapy practice and research that can allow the spirit of spirituality to begin to take transformational knowing and transformational being whilst expanding our knowing about the kind of spirituality that exists within the religious frame.
